In transit for a cruise

We are arriving in Shanghai, staying one night, and departing on a cruise for Japan, Korean, and then will eventually make a stop in Hong Hong before going on to Thailand. Do I still need a Chinese visa if in transit?

You don’t need it for that because you are eligible for the free transit in Shanghai. Nice trip!
