I am a US passport holder.  Leaving LA 1AM arrive Beijing at 5:30AM and depart for Shanghai 7:15 Am and arrive 9:30.  Going straight to ship to go to Japan as first port.  What kind of entry permit do I need and where how do I get it.

Hi, Pat, if your total time in Beijing and Shanghai is more than 24 hours, you need to apply for a transit G type for the trip beforehand. You should first prepare passport and the copy, the application form, a passport-style photo, transportation arrangement to Japan. Next, submit the application to the embassy or the consulate of China.
