About:240-Hour Visa-Free Transit

Multi-City Transit

Hi,

I booked a multi-city ticket all on China Eastern as follows:
NYC-PVG- (Shanghai) - SYD (Australia). I do not plan to leave the airport. And then on the way home:

SYD-PVG(short, stay in airport)-PEK (overnight and half a day, want to leave airport), then PEK-PVG (long, want to leave airport) - NYC

It is all one ticket and will be in China less than 72 hours, but in 2 different cities. Do I need to apply for a regular visa?

You do since two stops immediately limit your stay to 24 hours. Your layover is definitely over 24 hours.

If you don't want to get a visa then you must not travel to Beijing since the 144-hour free transit only allows you to stay within Shanghai and the neighboring provinces. Traveling to Beijing is a breach of condition and will cause you to be blacklisted.
