from shanghai to dunhuang

People said flight from Shanghai via Xian to Dunhuang always got cancelled due to weather condition. I'm thinking if March is a snowy time that Dunhuang is all covered by snow and outdoor activities all cancelled .... and most important is what is the best TRAIN route from Shanghai to Dunhuang ? For the shortest distance and timing what is the best transfer city ? Thanks !!
