About:72-Hour Visa-Free Transit

Switch planes in Guangzhou then 48 hours in Beijing -- am I eligible for a 72 or 144 hour visa?

I am flying from India, stopping in Beijing for 48 hours, then going on to the US. My plane from India to Beijing includes a change of plane in Guangzhou, with a 1 hour, 45 minute layover. Both legs are on China Southern. Can I either just be a transit passenger in Guangzhou and get my 72 hour free transit in Beijing or can I get a 144 hour free transit in Guangzhou that allows me to travel to and exit Beijing?

Neither. You need to obtain a transit visa prior to arrival when traveling like that. Guangzhou does not allow multi-stop transit so they're not gonna let you onboard the flight if not holding a valid visa.
