About:240-Hour Visa-Free Transit

Can I get a transfer visa after entering the gated area?

I have a US passport and am traveling back to the US after our vacation in India. We have a 9 hour layover in Shanghai (Pudong Airport).

My GF doesn’t want to leave the airport but I do.

Can I drop her off at our gate and then get a transfer visa? In other words, is there a way to apply for transfer entry permit after entering the gate area?

You cannot. Depends on the airlines you are traveling with, you may need to part ways with her at transit immigration (if not switching terminals) or at outbound immigration. Once you have cleared transit/outbound immigration you are not allowed to exit the airport's sterile transit area.
