Hi, Lew, if you travel like TPE-Shanghai(within 144 hours)-another country or region rather than Taiwan, you will be eligible for the 144 hour free transit in Shanghai. No visa will be required then. Nice trip!

Do I apply for the 144 hours at PVG?

After 144 hours could I go to HK and return back through Shenzhen on another transit visa?

Yes, you should apply for it in Shanghai, but you need to inform the airlines that you want to use the free transit in Shanghai when you board the plane in TPE. When you return back to Shenzhen, you can apply for a Shenzhen VOA for that.

Just wanted to update how it went. I wanted to stay 8 days ideally (I know the rule is only 6 max). So I booked an outbound flight PVG-HKG for 3, 6, 8 days out. Arrived asked for 8 due to circumstances (have valid entry permit in other passport that I forgot, have two kids with me that have valid visas, wife is Chinese), they said no to 8 days. I said well I also bought a 6 day out return. They let me in for 6 days and said I must leave by that day. So made it in, having my other passport overnighted to HK, will fly there and then return into china with my valid entry permit.
