Do I need a Chinese visa if I sail into Shanghai?

From what I understand there is a 144 hour exemption if I sail in and out of Shanghai. I am in Shanghai for three days. On day one and two I will be taking shore excursions provided by the cruise ship. on day three i’d Like to visit with my brother who works in Shanghai. Can I do this without getting a visa since I won’t be with the cruise line?

Hi, if you can enjoy the 144 hour free transit in Shanghai, there is no need to apply for a visa to visit with your brother in the city. Don't worry!
