About:72-Hour Visa-Free Transit FAQ

Visa Free Transit for a US citizen

Hello,

As a US citizen, does the free transit work for my Hong Kong - Shanghai - Taipei trip? Are Hong Kong & Taiwan classed as different countries for entry to Shanghai? I will be in Shanghai for 52 hours to visit Disneyland.

Thank you!

Yes, for immigration purposes, Hong Kong and Taipei are considered separate countries/regions.

Thanks, Rob! So the 72 hour free transit policy would apply for me? People keep telling me I need to apply for a visa so I'm so confused.

If you fly Hong Kong-Shanghai-Taipei on non-stop flights and a USA passport, you qualify for 144 hours free transit in Shanghai and you don't need a visa.
