Indirect flight outbound and direct flight back

If a passenger flies from Amsterdam to Seoul and then to Shanghai and back direct back to Amsterdam. Is this passenger then allowed the 72 hrs transit? or must the stopover always have to be on the way back?

That route is fine as long as the flights are non-stop and the passenger has a qualifying passport.
