Visiting Dragon's Backbone Rice Terraces in December

Is it worthwhile to visit the place in late December? Will the scenery still be good?

To be honest, Dec. is not the best time to visit there, and May to Oct. is better. The scenery will be just so so in Dec.

What is the weather like at the end of December and beginning of January? I understand that it is not the best time to visit, but since I will be in Yangshuo, is it worth taking a detour to the rice fields?

It can be a little cold during that time and the average temperature may be 10-12C. Although there may be many cloudy days, rainfall may happen. If you happen to arrive on a fine day, it is still worth to visit. You will love to take some pictures.
