Transit in Guangzhou airport with Malaysia passport

Hi, I am flying from New York (JFK) to Kota Kinabalu, Malaysia (BKI) with a 8 hours layover in Guangzhou (CAN). I am holding Malaysia passport, do I need a visa for the transit?

Yes, Ming, you need it for you cannot make use of the 24 hour direct transit in mainland China.

You can apply for a transit G type for that beforehand.
