Visa and air ticket

My wife and i are singaporeans holding singapore passports. We intent to visit xi'an and shanghai on the 20/10/20170 for a self arranged free and easy tour .
Can we arrived with a one way ticket and purchase our return ticket in china before we fly back ?
Do we need to apply entry permit if we are only travelling china for about 10 days ?
