About:24-Hour Visa-Free Transit

Montreal to Shanghai

Hello,

We are traveling from Montreal to Bangkok with a 18 hour layover in Shanghai. This 24 hour direct transit, is it handled at the airport only or do we need to go to the embassy in Montreal to get a visa?

Brandon, you won't need to go to the embassy in Montreal if your transit through China (Shanghai) is less than 72 hours. When you arrive in Shanghai you will see signs for 72 Hour Visa-Free Transit. I was in Shanghai in March and the signs were clearly visible. It's a separate line from the main immigration and customs line. Make sure you have your boarding passes available for your connecting flight to Bangkok. You MUST have those in your hands prior to arriving in Shanghai. Other than that you just need your passport.
