Question

Vancouver -> Beijing -> Shanghai, with two hour layover in Beijing on Oct 28th.Then Shanghai->Shenzhen-> Bangkok on Nov 1st.1 x British, 1 x Canadian. Are we able to take advantage of the 144-hour visa-free transit as we're not leaving the Beijing airport except to fly on to Shanghai?  Thank you!

Sorry, but in your case, the 144-hour free transit is not in service. But if you will stay in each city of China within 24 hours, no visa is needed, too. If not, you need to apply for one in advance.

There's no visa-free transit in Shenzhen. You need a visa or a different route.
