About:72-Hour Visa-Free Transit

72 hour visa to Beijing from Malaysia

I'm from the UK and currently in Malaysia. I want to fly to Beijing for 3 days (72 hours) to visit a friend.
Am I able to get a return flight from Malaysia - Beijing - Malaysia
Or would I have to go to a different country for example
Malaysia - Beijing - sinagapore - malaysia.. does that work?
PLEASE HELP!!!!!!

Malaysia-Beijing-Malaysia won't work because it's not a transit.
Malaysia-Beijing-Singapore-Malaysia will work.
Malaysia-Singapore-Beijing-Malaysia will also work.
(assuming you have a UK passport).
