About:72-Hour Visa-Free Transit FAQ

Flight out of China within 72 hours with plane change in China

I plan to fly London to PEK and then onto Sydney within 72 hours. The PEK flight to Sydney on Hainan Airways stops at XIY (Xi'an) for three hours, I will change planes before completing the journey to Sydney. Is this allowed?

If you have two stops in China you are limited to 24 hours on Chinese soil, unless you have a visa.

Not sure this answer is correct, the exit flight leaves within 72 hours it's just a plane change in China taking three hours and staying in the transit lounge before onward flight to Sydney?

The answer is definitely correct. The rules are quite clear. You have two stops, and therefore you are not eligible for 72 hours visa-free transit. It doesn't matter if you don't even get off the plane in Xi'an. You are limited to 24 hours from scheduled arrival in Xi'an to scheduled departure from Beijing. You either need to change your itinerary or get a visa. If you don't think this is correct then by all means go to the airport in London, where you will be denied boarding.

I am sure you are right but one final check. I go straight to Beijing from UK. I leave Beijing with transit stop in Xi'an then onto Sydney. I do all this within 72 hours. Is this what you gathered from my previous email?

So your route is UK-Beijing-Xi'an-Sydney. You have two stops in China, and this automatically limits you to 24 hours direct transit, from scheduled arrival time in Beijing to scheduled departure time from Xi'an. To have 72 hours free transit in Beijing you would have to fly non-stop from Beijing to Sydney (or another country) without another stop in China. So your choices are to change your itinerary or get a visa.
