How to cure a beam that separates living room and dining/kitchen?

Ceiling in my living room is higher than the ceiling in my kitchen/dining room. These two are separated by a beam. Can I put the dining table under them beam? What cure can I put?

You are advised to hang the curtain between the living room and dining/kitche. Or you can also put the dining table.
