About:72-Hour Visa-Free Transit

Is a China Visa required for? (US Citizen)

1. Sept 27 (San Jose, California to Vancouver to Hong Kong), arrive HK Sept 28.
2. Oct 1 (Hong Kong to Beijing) - is an entry permit required here?
3. Oct 3 (Beijing to Vancouver to San Jose)

I believe since I am in Beijing under 72 hours, an entry permit isn't required? Thank you.
