Would this qualify for 72 hour transit stay if time spent in third country is very short?

Flying direct Toronto to Hong Kong. Staying in Hong Kong only two hours. Then flying Hong Kong to Shanghai and fly SH to Toronto next day. Would free transit apply during stay in SH. Is this permissible? Thanks for any help you can provide.

Are you going to layover for 2h in HK? If so, your travel route should be Toronto - HK/SH - Toronto, which is not qualified for the visa free transit. Therefore, you need to apply for a transit visa in advance if wishing to have a short visit there.
