About:China Tourist Visa

Do I need to give them my original passport?

I am a US citizen, living in Los Angeles. I was wondering, if I applied for an L type, would I have to turn in my ORIGINAL passport along with the application? I was wondering because I don't really want to turn in my original passport, I'd rather keep my original passport with me at all times. Thank you.
