About:144-Hour Visa-Free Transit

Confused, please help!

I have read about this a billion times and for some reason I can't figure out if my itinerary will work for this. Here it is:
GSO-EWR-NRT-PVG all back to back within 2 days. We will not be leaving any of the connecting airports
3 days later leave from Shanghai cruise port for a cruise with 2 stops in Japan
5 days later return to Shanghai and travel to Beijing
3 days later return to Shanghai
Leave from Shanghai the next day and go from PVG-EWR-GSO

The reason I am confused is because I do not know if we can use two 144 hour free transit. Once upon our arrival to Shanghai and then again after the cruise.

Thanks!

It's quite clear that you need a visa in advance. First of all, NRT-PVG-Japan isn't a transit. Then later you have two stops in China (Shanghai and Beijing). So you don't qualify for 144 hr free transit at all.

Thank you!! I think I read different situations on so many sites I just confused myself. We had pretty much settled on the idea that we were going to have to pay for visas so it's not that big of a deal. Something I read somewhere made me confused. Thank you for the answer!
