About:72-Hour Visa-Free Transit

Taiwan "Visa"

I am staying in Taiwan for 3 months and 4 days, (which is above the 90 day free permission for US citizens), so I need to get out and come back to Taiwan sometime in the middle.

I have a friend in Shanghai who I would love to visit.

If I understand well I would have to fly to someplace else to be able to stay in Shanghai.
For example : TPE - PVG - HKG ?
TPE - PVG - TPE wouldn't be possible right ?

Victor, you are right. TPE - PVG - HKG will qualify the free transit in Shanghai, while TPE - PVG - TPE wouldn't be possible.
