About:China Visa

Is a China visa required to fly grom USA to board cruise ship in Shanghai

I am going on a cruise in October that boards in Shanghai abd sails to S. Korea, Taiwan, Philippines, Vietnam and disembarks in Hong Kong. Do I need a China entry permit or can I get a 144 hour free transit exemption?
