About:Guangzhou Baiyun International Airport

Where is immigration control done?

In October we arrive in CAN from Australia in transit to Shanghai SHA airport, to join a cruise ship. Is immigration control done at CAN or SHA? I know that if I arrive at Shanghai international terminal I can take advantage of the 144 hour no-visa transit but what happens if I arrive from CAN? I understand that Guangzhou has not yet implemented the 144 hour no-visa policy.

In your case, the immigration control should be finished in GZ. The 144h visa-free policy has not implemented in GZ. Although it has, your case doesn't fit. So you need to apply for a transit visa in advance.
