Do I need a Single Entry Visa for a US passport holder

If I'm flying into Shanghai from the USA and only staying 1 night before boarding a cruise ship, do I need one?

Hi, if you will go to a third country or region rather than USA, you can enjoy free transit in Shanghai, no need to apply for a visa then.
