there are 5 of us travelling Beijing-Xian,  Xian - Zhengzhou,,  Zhengzhou-Shanghai. Next May 2018,

It is OK, usually about 90 passengers in a second class carriage. For 5 passenegrs you may able to hold the seats for a row. If you meet some misbehaved passengers the trip did become less enjoyable, but this is by chance, no matter first or second class seat.
