Visiting historic site during layover

I am planning to travel to Japan from US but have an 18 hour layover in Beijing. Would it be possible to visit the Mutianyu section of the Great Wall during the layover or would I need to apply for a visa?

Trey, you don’t need a visa because you qualify for the 24 hour direct transit in Beijing. You just need to apply for a temporary stay permit at Beijing airport and then you can go to the city for a tour.
