is it possible to get to and from Qinghai Lake by public transport as a day trip from Xining?

Yes, you can tour around the lake as a day trip. The transportation is quite convenient. Take a coach from Bayi Road Bus Station and arrive at Erlangjian Scenic Area directly. The departures are very frequent. The duration is around 2.5 hours for a single trip. The ticket fare is CNY 37 per person.
