Santi, I haven't heard that. You are advised to apply for a visa for China. Just in case.

Surely doesn't say so on Timatic so you may be denied boarding.

I have spent a lot of time trying to figure out all the correct details of the 72 -Hour Visa Free Transit. I can't find any documentation from the Chinese Embassy regarding how the 72 hours is determined. I have seen online that the time, in Beijing starts
1. According to your scheduled time of arrival and ends according to your scheduled time of departure. This seems to be the the information that is stated most often by Visa Services.

I have seen that in other cities in China, the time starts a 0001 minute on the day following your entry date, and ends at 11:59pm, 3 days later, therefore your time in China can be longer than 72 hours, but they usually state that Beijing uses different criteria to determine the time.
The best advice is to try to speak to the Immigration Office at the Beijing Airport to get accurate information.
Sorry, I know this isn't helpful, but at least it isn't false advise either, and it won't get you stranded at the Beijing airport.

You cannot find anything too useful on embassy's websites nowadays. Apart from Beijing, there are only four cities that are subject to the exact-72-hour rule: Shenyang, Qingdao, Guilin and Harbin. Granted, this policy (and the visa waiver as a whole) is so poorly documented that many people were either denied boarding or forced to contact their airline to change their itinerary when they reached immigration.
