About:72-Hour Visa-Free Transit

We are flying from Sydney to Shanghai Tuesday 31st October arriving 22.20.

Staying 2 nights in Shanghai before we Board the Cruise Ship Thursday November 2nd at 15.00 ....approx. 40 hours in Shanghai. We then arrive back into Shanghai Thursday November 9th at 06.00 and fly back to Sydney departing Shanghai 16.25.
I am confused as to whether or not we need to obtain a Visa. The Agent said ( something along these lines) "You can do it without a Visa but you have to join a very long queue to get thru Immigration". Can any help?

The agent's right. You do not need a visa, period. However, you may need an hour or so to clear immigration because you are there on a visa-waiver, so you must use a dedicated lane which can take a while.
