Airport transit and visa

Hi,

I will go from Rome to Shanghai with an airport transit in Xian of three hours. So my final destination of the fly is Shanghai Pudong. Then from Shanghai two days later I will embark on a cruise for Japan. I need a visa or I can have the 144 hours free transit?
