About:72-Hour Visa-Free Transit FAQ

U.S.SERVICE MEMBER

I am U.S. service member and I am currently station in Korea and I am planning a trip to California. The ticket I want to purchase will take me to Beijing Airport. The layover in PEK is for 16 hours and the return to Korea is 8 hours layover, but I do not have a passport. The only documents I will have will be my official orders to Korea, leave form DA FORM 31 and my military ID. My questions is do I have to have passport or visa if I do not leave the terminal area? Will just transfer from flight to the other and just stay in the terminal area.

Would appreciate the help before I go ahead and purchase the ticket.

China requires all passengers to hold passports for international arrivals. If you don't have a passport, then you cannot travel to China, period. Military ID cards are only acceptable in countries that have agreements with the US.
