About:144-Hour Visa-Free Transit

Does the travel to and from Shanghai have to be a direct flight to and from

or can you stopover enroute etc. eg Hong kong airlines from Bkk to shanghai via Hong kong?

You can stopover anywhere as long as it is not also in mainland China. Hong Kong does not count.
