Do I need to pin tours to see most Beiijing tourist sports?

I will be in Beijing on June 21st, 2017 for four days. Can we see most of the main tourist spots on our own by metro and bus, or do we need to go on tours through a tour company.
What is the most central and convenient area to stay in for a budget traveller?
