Hello I'd like to travel to Hong Kong

but if I asked the airline to route me to Shanghai to stay there for the maximum of 144 hours then continue on to Hong Kong is that considered acceptable

Bill, you mean you will travel like Canada-Shanghai (144 hours)-HK, right? If yes, it is acceptable and you will be able to use the 144 hour visa-free transit in Shanghai.
