Is it better to take a train or bus from Beijing to Datong?

Can I take the overnight train, cover all the major sights in a day and take the night train back?

For your convenience, you are advised to take a train from Beijing Railway Station. The schedules are 00:18, 02:49, 15:33, 21:40 and 23:32. The trip takes nearly 7 hours. According to this, you can take the overnight train and tour around the scenic areas in the day time. After that, take a train back to Beijing. Have a nice trip!
