So your travel route is UK-Shanghai-Tokyo-Shanghai-UK? You can enjoy the 144h free transit in Shanghai on both directions so the entry permit is not required. And during the layovers, you can leave the airprot to sightsee in the city.

Thanks thats brilliant.
Are there any complications with the 144 hour free transit that I should expect?
Are there going to be any issues as I am flying Heathrow connection in Beijing then onto Shanghai?
I read somewhere that you can only use the 144 free transit if you have no connections?
