For high speed rides, there should be a western styled toilet on one side of the carriage, the same as soft sleeper carriage on normal rides. They are not available in hard sleeper carriages.

Upon further research on "Facilities" on the website that the high speed train Shanghai to Kunming is mostly or entirely western style toilets and all cars are coaches 2nd class, first class or business class affecting the size of seat. There is reassurance that "toilets are not a problem" but you are also advised to bring your own toilet paper as the provided paper quickly runs out!
