About:72-Hour Visa-Free Transit

RT ticket from Japan

Just to make sure I am understanding this right: If I am flying RT from Tokyo to Shanghai I (an American) cannot use the 72 hour visa as I am not technically "in transit" to another location?
I think that is what everything is saying but I wanted to confirm.

You're not in transit, so you're not eligible for transit without visa. You need a visa in advance for that itinerary.
