The shorts, 4 inches above your knee are ok. No worry. Chinese people are open now and they accept most clothes, only if they are not too revealing.

You'll be fine. As long as you are not walking around wearing booty shorts and tube tops the locals won't bat an eye. The only place I would say try to be more conservative is when you visit a temple or go to someone's home, and even then most Chinese wear pretty casual clothing like Tshirts and jeans/shorts. I would say they are less conservative in dress code compare to many European countries. I remember when I visited Italy I can't enter many the churches without a long skirt and my arms covered. When I was in China I wore weather appropriate clothing that are either Tshirts/sweaters or jeans/shorts. The locals only cared about trying to sell me stuff and could not care less what I had on lol.
