About:72-Hour Visa-Free Transit FAQ

I am traveling from Bali, Indonesia to Guangzhou airport for a 13 hour layover than onto NY, US

If I understand correctly, I can leave the airport to visit the city without a visa, as long as I have my passport and my ticket showing a seat for the flight from Guangzhou to NY, is that correct? Also as long as we tell the airline when checking in at Bali. There is no other action required?

How long do I need to get back through customs or checkin? There was a mention of a special line for 72 hr visitors at Guangzhou? Do you think there is enough time (13 hr layover) to leave? Where do you find the desk that can help you find transportation. Travel date April 5, 2017
Thank you
Donna

Hi Donna! You are correct, you can visit the city, just by applying for a temporary stay permit with your passport and onward ticket. You do not need to tell the airline when checking in at Bali, but upon arrival in Guangzhou, you need to do the temporary stay permit application at the airport.

13 hours layover is enough to take a short trip in the city, There is a special line for 72h free transit, but you may need to use the regular immigration line as your layover is less than 24 hours. As for transportation advice, you can ask any airline staff for guidance.
