Aaron, so you will travel like Manchester-HK-Shanghai-Japan-Shanghai-HK-Manchester? If yes, you will be able to make use of the 144 hour free transit each time. No visa will be needed then. You should inform the airlines that you want to use the free transit in Shanghai when you board the flight in HK and Japan; after arrival, you can go to the transit counter to apply for the free transit.
