Mark, if your total layover in Guangzhou and Shanghai are more than 24 hours, you cannot enjoy the free transit policy and you need to apply for a regular visa depending on your visit purpose. If you travel for sightseeing purpose, you need to submit your passport, passport copy, application form attached with your recent photo, and round-trip tickets and hotel bookings.1
