About:144-Hour Visa-Free Transit

Going on a cruise--flying US to Hong Kong, boarding ship--ports in order are Taiwan (Taipei),

Japan (Okinawa), China (Shanghai), Japan (Nagasaki), Japan (Kobe), Japan (Shimizu), Japan (Tokyo), fly back to US about 15 days after port in Shanghai. Do we qualify for the 144 Hour Free Transit?(we do have US, Hong Kong, Taiwan and also Japan right before Shanghai which we stay in for less than 18 hours and then Japan right after) Also, do we need a visa to board the ship in Hong Kong? (If it turns out that we need a visa for Shanghai, we may stay on the ship for that port but want to make sure that we will be allowed to embark in Hong Kong and disembark in Japan.

Marty, if so, you won’t qualify for the 144 hour free transit in Shanghai. You need to apply for a visa for China.
You can enjoy free entry to HK for a stay of not exceeding 90 days, so no visa is needed for HK.

Because based on what you said, the last country you come from before entering Shanghai is Japan, and after visiting Shanghai, you will go back to Japan. However, the 144 hour policy requires that you should travel like country A-Shanghai-country B.
