About:72-Hour Visa-Free Transit

Layover of 10 hrs in Beijing from Phuket to USA

My son and I are US citizens. We have a 10 hour layover in Beijing on our way home to the USA from Phuket Thailand. Can we apply for the 72h visit visa to visit Some of Beijing and then shower and rest at an airport hotel? Are there areas of Beijing we can't visit? Must we collect our luggage or will it go through to our final destination?

Yes, you can apply for it and visit the city and rest in a hotel. You can visit almost everywhere of the city. As for your luggage, you need to contact with your airline to ask this. Generally speaking, if you hold a one-way ticket, you don't need to collect your luggage. If you hold seperate tickets, you need to claim your luggage.

Thank you so much for answering my questions and making all this more clear to me. Am I correct in understanding that since I have a flight ticket continuing on to the US that I don't need to inform the airline before boarding of my planes to stay in and see Beijing? ? After passing through customs and obtaining the visit visa I just go to my airline's ticket counter to ensure my luggage is passed on through to the US and check in (get my seat assignment) for my flight home correct? All my flight tickets were purchased together so I have a connection or continuing ticket.
Any other advice/suggestions?

No, you don't need to inform the airline before boarding your plane as your transit time is less than 24 hours. You can just go to the airline's immigration counter to apply for a temporary stay permit by showing your flight ticket and passport.
