It was an important part of Chinese culture. Explain how their religious belief contributed to their success as a civilization?

As I know, the main doctrines of Confucianism is being moderate, which is similar with most Chinese's personalities. On the other side, it also spread a sense of hierarchy in some degree, which was appreciated by royal family in old times and was then popularized among the whole country.
