Pat, you can take self-use amount of pens and OTC medications into the country. I heard the prescription medicines are not allowed to take.

I've been to China 3 times in the last 18 months and have always taken my prescription medication. I only take the number of doses that I need for the duration of my trip and am sure to keep them in the labeled prescription bottles. I have never had my medications confiscated or even questioned. I've had them in both my carry-on luggage as well as my checked bag.
