In major cities such as Beijing or Shanghai, from anywhere from about 10 days before New Years Day until up to 15 days afterward, restaurants, stores, bars, etc. will close as the employees will return to their hometowns in the provinces. In mainland China, New Years Eve, Day, and five days afterward, a week in total, are official holidays and workers will be out of the office, although many schedule their vacations and take off extra days around these dates and business is generally quite slow. Some restaurants and chain stores in mega malls may stay open, for example, McDonalds, restaurants of Chinese Muslim minorities, etc.
