Register at local police station for less than 24 hours in Shanghai?

Hello! If we have a layover Shanghai for less than 20 hours at a time (15 hours on the way to Tokyo; 18 hours on the way back from Tokyo), do we still need to register at the local police station before 24 hours upon arrival in Shanghai? We plan on touring the city during those layovers. Thanks!

Katia, you don’t need to register at the local police station if you stay there for not more than 24 hours.
